This is a collection of various personal "Happy Snaps" of me over the years.
I have spent my life taking photographs of others and am rarely in front of the camera.
My photographic education taught that a photographer is a catalyst for the picture. It is the image and subject that is featured, not the photographer.
So please excuse my self indulgence displaying these photographs after years of visual obscurity.
Mostly in chronological order - please scroll down

MY 38th YEAR IN NASHVILLE

On MAY 28th 1978 (my father’s sixtieth birthday) he drove me to London’s Gatwick Airport where I boarded a flight to Dallas, Ft Worth.

There I bought a white bicentennial Chevrolet Impala and drove it to Nashville where my new apartment on 16th Avenue (Music Row) awaited.
I had jobs lined up and set to work immediately.

The 80’s were boom years, I racked up hundreds of album covers, photographed many notable musicians in my studio,
won a Grammy (album packaging) and was probably shooting a session every day.

I was introduced to Johnny Cash in ’87 (we had met briefly in ’77) and a lifelong friendship and hundreds of photographs ensued.
I have been a professional photographer for 48 years. It can take a long time to be oneself. The past few years have been amazing.
I am shooting more pictures than ever. There is more to tell, but let’s save that for another day
.

Today would have been my Father’s 98th birthday.

On the roof of 160 6th Avenue / Spring Street, New York

Photograph by Harry Pincus

I rented a wonderful artist loft in this building in 1990 with skyline views that included the Empire State from my studio windows
and the Twin Towers from the south end. The views are now obscured by massive buildings, some multi million dollar penthouses and a loud club.
I met Harry Pincus a freelance illustrator, who lived in the apartment below me, (mine was the top floor).
We enjoyed many conversations on this roof and he gave me this print of his illustration, which I have treasured for 25 years.

TAKING AIM book launch and Exhibition - EMP Museum, Seattle

JIM MARSHALL was a great music photographer, I had the opportunity to praise him at a forum of music photographers in Seattle, during a book launch for
Graham Nash's TAKING AIM (Unforgettable Rock 'n' Roll Photographs), two months before Jim's death on March 24th 2010.

The last two chroniclers of Johnny CASH were me and Jim. His photographs are iconic. I am so thankful that we became friends for a moment.
My photograph of MARC BOLAN is in Graham's, TAKING AIM book and is the German edition ICONS OF ROCK book cover
.

IRELAND
I cycled in Ireland and then Scotland for about one month.
The trip was fantastic, I met some wonderful people, drank with many (advantage of a bike!) heard much music and poetry mostly in bars,

saw many sheep along the way, learned some Celtic folk-law and more.
Always wondered why bike magazines have pictures of bikes in various travel scenes, most of my photographs are too.

This one is a "selfie" (as it's now called) somewhere in Ireland, probably Galway area.

GRAMMY 1988
I won a GRAMMY once. Got "Album Package Of The Year" with my photo-silkscreen of a country duo, THE O'KANES.
I shared the Grammy with art director, Bill Johnson (deceased).
It was similar to winning a Gold Star at kindergarten. Fruitless, although an elation at the time.

Bill Johnson was a dear friend and the art director at CBS / Nashville, which became Sony.
We worked on dozens of albums together. Bill was an artist, he had been a notable designer with Rolling Stone in the early days.
I have been fortunate to work with a select few tough art directors and picture editors that have helped shape my career
and professional eye. Bill Johnson was a delightful man and friend, but a keen task master in the office.
He pushed my "art" button to produce this piece and that is the mark of a good art director.
A doorman took this picture with my camera.

Me photographing country star, Mel Tillis, on his farm in Ashland City, Tennessee.
I am still using this 135mm Nikkor lens.
This picture was shot on my Olympus Stylus 35mm film camera with Kodak Tri-X, probably by my assistant.
One Nikon was always loaded with Kodak Tri-X black and white, the other camera with colour chrome or Polaroid, which was a fantastic black and white positive film.

Foot-note:
After a couple of head bashes, I learned to keep my left eye open when I was shooting.
The 60's tv studios had boom mics and huge tv cameras.

I brought much of the record company work back to Nashville by working with LA record companies.
During the 80s I shot hundreds of sessions and albums. Before that many were shot by flying photographers in from the West coast.
I always believed in Nashville.
