TONY JOE WHITE
Celebration Of Life
Marathon Music Works, Nashville
JAMIE JOHNSON sang, ‘Rainy Night In Georgia’ in tribute. I have more pictures to post, this was the first of the three-hour celebration.
The Nashville music community is a close-knit family and it is times like these that conjures up the emotion and respect when one leaves the circle.
We all loved Tony Joe White, he was a cool dude, a damn good writer and unique performer with his swamp groove.

MAY 22, 1968
KING'S ROAD, LONDON

ME walking by JOHN and YOKO in the King’s Road, fifty years ago.
I don't remember this moment and wonder, seeing this, why I didn't ask John if I could go to the Apple Tailoring opening too.
I had just photographed him and George at Club Dell'Aretusa. I was just seventeen and very shy, but I did get some of the best photographs that day.
After my old Record Mirror friend, Lon, sent this snap, I did some research and now know more about that event and what was going on with John and George at that time.

Sometimes my camera knows more than me.
I remember the cameras! On my right shoulder is my Nikkormat, on my left Dezo's Nikon Photomic F, around my neck another Nikon and i have a Mecablitz Flash, which I never used. I don't remember that black case. I carried too much gear and forever since I have prefered the stealth of one or two cameras.
My freelance career began at this time, working from Dezo Hoffmann's studio, I have worked for myseff ever since.

It would be wonderful to find the original picture.and photographer.

I drove down to Muscle Shoals to photograph "Swamper" David Hood on his birthday, sitting where he laid down classic bass tracks from 1969 - 1978.
The sheet music behind him is, "Still Crazy After All These Years", just one of the many sessions. He's "Taken Us There" many times.

“STONES IN THE PARK”
Hyde Park, July 5, 1969

Forty-nine years ago, I got punched by a Hells Angel, thrown out of the press area, then regained my position in the press pit by befriending the leader of the pack

and taking a picture of him posing with some other Angels.
It was Mick Taylor’s first gig with the group, replacing Brian Jones, who had died two days earlier.
Note: Never lend your press pass to a fellow jounalist for a beer run!

It’s only rock and roll!

JULY 2
I photographed JOHNNY CASH for the summer edition of SPIN magazine. Getting John to pose in a swimsuit took some convincing, but he was always open to fun,

so we shot a session early in the morning and I couriered the unexposed film on a noon flight to New York to Bob Guccione, Jr. (the owner of Spin), the film was processed, edited and the feature ran. This was before digital, before email, before electronic file sharing. This is an outtake from the session.

MAY 28
TODAY IS MY 40th YEAR IN NASHVILLE
On May 28th 1978 (my father’s sixtieth birthday) he drove me to London’s Gatwick Airport, where I boarded a flight to Dallas, Ft Worth.
There I bought a white bicentennial Chevrolet Impala and drove it to Nashville, where my new apartment on Music Row awaited.

I had jobs lined up and set to work immediately.
The 80’s were boom years, I racked up hundreds of album covers, photographing many notable musicians in my studio, won a Grammy

and was probably shooting a session every day and printing most nights.
I was introduced to Johnny Cash in ’87 (we had met briefly in ’77) and a lifelong friendship and hundreds of photographs ensued.
I have been a professional “music” photographer for 50 years and a Nashville resident for forty years.
I am as passionate about photography today as when I bought my first camera at seven, sixty years ago.

My father would have been 100 today..

BILLY GRAHAM - R.I.P.
A long life well lived.

I met Billy Graham several times with his close friend, Johnny Cash.
Beyond Billy Graham’s evangelistic fame, he was a genuinely wonderful man, husband and a true friend to his friends.
Driving in the motorcade to a Crusade site was almost presidential.
This picture is from a Billy Graham Crusade at Williams-Brice Stadium, Columbia, South Carolina - May 1987
