DECEMBER 4
Dezo Hoffmann's Studio, 1967
52 years ago today (Dec 4th, 1967) I started work at Dezo Hoffmann’s London studio on a Monday morning as a professional photographer, I was sixteen.
Within a week I was assistant on a Jimi Hendrix photo session and was soon shooting pictures on tv shows, press receptions and for magazine features.
My first magazine publication was the cover of the Record Mirror (Feb 1968), then a Small Faces feature story in April, ’68.
Unfortunately, my employer and mentor Dezo lost his contract with the magazine and within six months I lost my job, and so my freelance / self-employed career started mid 1968.
Dezo put me on a small retainer plus commission (that he never paid me) but I pressed on. My work was being published in pop magazines, Dezo's ambition had waned after his Beatle era, but I was young and picture editors and clients wanted my new photographs.
My first record cover (Bobbie Gentry “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again”- 1970) earned Dezo £25 and me nothing, not even a credit! But it was a thrilling start.
The money was terrible and I could hardly afford the train fare to work, plus lunch, but I was and still am, relentless. I got the pictures because I am a photographer and an avid documenter.
In 1978 after a decade in London, eventually with my own studio and doing well, I was restless, so I moved to Nashville and set up a studio.
Forty-one years later and hundreds of album covers and thousands of photographs and a few awards (including a Grammy), I am still here as passionate as ever about photography and graphic design. I work every day.
Cameras have changed, we now have computers, not darkrooms, but a picture is still a picture and still a thrill.
A new chapter is opening for me.

Alan

WILLIAM LEE GOLDEN (Oak Ridge Boys)
and his wife, SIMONE in their kitchen on the farm in Brewton Alabama.
This was a real "Homecoming" celebrating Alabama's bicentennial.
Golden was born on the farm eighty years ago, across the cotton fields that now surround the family home and barn.
I was included in the celebrations by doing a one hour slide show both in the house for friends and media and then at the public event.

We spoke about the pictures and stories behind them that reflect four decades.
Golden flew in a private jet from Branson to attend the event for four hours, as he was performing nightly with the Oak Ridge Boys who keep a busy touring schedule.

DEZO HOFFMANN - DOCUMENTARY

Me being interviewed in my Nashville studio for a long anticipated documentary film about photographer DEZO HOFFMANN who was my employer and mentor.
For those who don’t know, Hungarian born Dezo was the Beatles photographer in the early days.
I was Dezo's assistant for the first six months of my career (1967) and then became a self-employed freelance from mid 1968, initially working from his London studio.
The Slovakian film crew are fabulous and this is a story I have wanted told for decades to honour Dezo and his iconic photographs.

APRIL 1976
BUFFY SAINTE-MARIE
JUST FOUND THIS SESSION DURING AN EDIT.

This was one of my first studio photo sessions, eight years into my career.
I rented a canvas to emulate the early photography from the wagon train days when they would use the wagon covering as a backdrop.
Buffy Sainte-Marie is an extraordinary woman, she is now 78 years young.

I am so pleased I was able to do this short photo session as she was pregnant and was not feeling her best. But she is a strong woman and I jwas compelled to photograph her. A pregnant woman usually has fabulous skin and a glow.

This is a contact sheet scan, hence the low quality and dust. Until recently I thought I had lost this set of pictures. I still can't find the colour.

MAY 28
41 YEARS IN NASHVILLE
On May 28th 1978 (my Father’s sixtieth birthday) he drove me to London’s Gatwick Airport where I boarded a flight to Dallas, Ft Worth.
There I bought a white bicentennial Chevrolet Impala and drove it to Nashville, where my new apartment on Music Row awaited.
I had jobs lined up and set to work immediately.
The 80’s were boom years.
I racked up hundreds of album covers, photographing many notable musicians in my studio, won a Grammy (album packaging)
and was probably shooting a session every day and printing most nights.
I was introduced to Johnny Cash in ’87 (we had met briefly in ’78) and a lifelong friendship and hundreds of photographs ensued.
I have been a professional photographer for fifty-one years.
I am shooting more pictures than ever and as passionate about photography as when I bought my first camera when I was seven.

MAY 26
MEMORIAL WEEKEND / SUNDAY
Nashville National Cemetery

For two days I spent several emotional hours at the National Cemetery, where there are graves and markers for over 36,000 American souls.
It is sad to see the families who had lost husbands, sons, brothers, sisters, daughters, wives and best friends.
They all seemed to want to be close by touching the grave markers, some told me their stories, others I observed from a respectful distance.
Everyone I met there were polite lovely people.
I don't feel this is a day for celebration, but a day for respectful memories to those who were killed in action doing their duty, regardless of politics.
